District Energy Security Programme (DESP)

  • The Renewable Energy Mandate is a strategic initiative by the Umgungundlovu District Municipality (UMDM) to provide and wheel bulk renewable energy to all local municipalities within the district. The project aims to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources by using existing infrastructure to transmit clean, affordable renewable energy to local municipalities, supporting sustainability and energy security.
  • Facilitated by the Umgungundlovu Municipality Development Agency (UMEDA), the project has received UMDM Council approval and is in the process of engaging with local municipalities. The next step is the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with each municipality.
  • The financial requirement of R1,000,000 has been raised from the private sector to conclude the various legal aspects of the complex administrative and legislative requirements, and the project expects to create 200 jobs and generate further employment during the implementation phase.
  • Key impacts include reduced energy costs, promoted sustainability, improved energy security, economic development, and job creation. Once MOUs are signed, the project will move forward with securing energy generation agreements, contributing to South Africa’s renewable energy targets.
