International Sporting Events

The International Sporting Events project is a transformative initiative aimed at positioning the uMgungundlovu District as a premier destination for global sporting events while fostering local talent through the establishment of a Sporting School of Excellence. This project seeks to attract high-profile sporting competitions to the region, boosting tourism, economic activity, and community engagement in athletics. Additionally, the Sporting School of Excellence, to be developed in partnership with Durban University of Technology (DUT), will provide top-tier training and development programs for aspiring athletes.

Currently, efforts are underway to secure and host new sporting events within the district, leveraging the area’s existing infrastructure and potential for international recognition. The collaboration with DUT marks a significant step in nurturing young talent, providing them with access to professional training, mentorship, and career development opportunities.

With a financial requirement of R244 million, the project to create more than 120 job opportunities, particularly in sports management, coaching, event coordination, and facility operations. Located under Msunduzi Municipality, this initiative represents a major investment in the district’s sporting future, fostering both economic growth and a legacy of excellence in athletics.
